About Miracle Berries
What is Miracle Berry?
Miracle Berry or Miracle Fruit - Sideroxylon dulcificum or Synsepalum dulcificum
The Miracle Fruit, also referred to as Miracle Berry,Miraculous Berry, or Magic Berry is a plant first documented by an explorer named Des Marchais during a 1725 excursion to it's native West Africa. Here, Marchais noticed that local tribes chewed the berries before meals to improve the taste of bland food.
When the fleshy part of the fruit is eaten, the active molecule binds tongue's taste buds, causing bitter and sour foods (such as lemons and limes) consumed later to taste sweet!
This effect lasts between 30 minutes and two hours.
The Miracle berry itself is not sweet. The taste changing effect is caused by a glycoprotein
in the flesh of the fruit called Miraculin. It works by binding itself to the taste buds which
in turn makes sour and bitter food such as lemon and lime taste exceptionally sweet. Other
beneficial effects of Miracle berry such as an aid to a low calorie diet or helping cancer
patients regain their appetite after chemotherapy are widely discussed online.
